What makes me different from other therapists?

A woman in a light blue dress stands barefoot on a purple rug in front of a wooden dresser, with green plants and decorative items on the wall behind her, and purple and tan walls.
  • The Tagalog word Kaagapay translates to “one who stands by one’s side in support”. It is a concept which is grounded in mutual respect, trust, and solidarity, values which guide the way that I interact with you in the therapeutic space. My role is not to save you from yourself, but to stand by your side as you work through the shadows and make your way back to your true self; the person you were before the world changed you, the person you have been all along.

  • My practice is decolonial, transcultural, and liberation focused, work which is inherently trauma-informed, systemically critical, queer and neurodivergent affirming, and grounded in the reclamation of ancestral and cultural wisdom.

  • As an EMDR trained therapist, I have access to a tool which is recognized as one of the most effective methods of processing trauma. However, the traditional way it is practiced - that is, focusing on an individual’s isolated experiences and thinking processes - risks missing (and strengthening) intergenerational and systemic sources of harm. Sometimes our distress is a rational response to an irrational world. I will never use the tools at my disposal to help you make yourself small.

  • I will collaborate with you to build a culturally relevant, empowering treatment plan that honours the complexity of your lived experience and recognizes the ongoing impact of structural oppression.

  • I will help you find meaningful ways to cope and support you in increasing your capacity to hold distressing symptoms.

  • I will support you when you sense injustice, help you trace it back to the source, and then help you decide what you are going to do about it.

  • I will be your Kaagapay - I will stand with you as you process your experiences and then celebrate with you as you reclaim your power… and your joy.
